South African e-commerce giant Takealot has officially opened a state-of-the-art distribution centre in Durban, marking a major milestone in its quest to enhance delivery services in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The facility, located at Brickworks Industrial Park, was inaugurated on 20 September 2024, and is set to offer faster, more efficient delivery to customers in the province.
In a statement released on Wednesday, 27 November, Takealot highlighted that the new centre is part of its ongoing efforts to meet the rising demand in the region. The Durban hub is the third in Takealot’s regional distribution network, joining its counterparts in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Expanding Takealot’s Reach in KZN
Despite operating in KwaZulu-Natal for more than a decade, the new centre significantly enhances Takealot’s logistical capacity. Spanning an impressive 43,000 square metres, it can process and dispatch up to 45,000 packages daily, enabling quicker order fulfillment for customers in the province.
Frederik Zietsman, CEO of Takealot Group, emphasised the strategic importance of the new distribution centre in fostering economic growth and job creation in the region.
“The opening of our new Durban Distribution Centre is an investment in the local economy of KwaZulu-Natal,” said Zietsman. “It enhances our delivery network to better serve the people of the province.”
Job Creation and Economic Boost
Takealot’s Durban facility is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities across various sectors, including warehouse operations, logistics, and partnerships with local delivery services. This move is set to benefit not only job seekers but also small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region.
Zietsman acknowledged Durban’s strategic significance as a key player in South Africa’s trade and logistics landscape.
“Durban, being one of South Africa’s leading industrial and economic hubs, plays an important role in the country’s trade and logistics networks,” he noted.
The city’s ports serve as a vital link between regional markets and global supply chains, making it an ideal location for Takealot’s latest investment.
Strategic Advantage for Takealot
The new distribution centre allows Takealot to tap into Durban’s well-established transport infrastructure, offering seamless access to critical trade routes. This development not only strengthens Takealot’s position in the competitive e-commerce market but also reinforces its commitment to improving customer service in KZN and beyond.
As Takealot continues to expand its operations, the Durban facility represents a significant step toward enhancing e-commerce efficiency in South Africa, ensuring faster delivery times and broader economic benefits for the region.
