Sun International has officially announced the appointment of internationally renowned gaming executive Ulrik Bengtsson as its new Chief Executive, effective from July 1, 2025, or an earlier date, depending on the securing of his work permit.
The appointment follows an extensive global search for a leader who could drive Sun International’s expansion and transformation in the fast-evolving gaming and hospitality industry.
A Proven Industry Leader
Bengtsson, a Swedish national, has nearly two decades of leadership experience across gaming, betting, broadcasting, and telecoms. His track record includes major business transformations, strategic acquisitions, and scaling omnichannel platform businesses.
Notably, he served as Group CEO of William Hill plc, where he successfully turned the company around and led its sale to Caesars Entertainment Inc. for R70 billion ($2
R37.14.9 billion). He also oversaw the subsequent sale of William Hill’s European assets to 888 Holdings Limited for R55 billion ($2
R37.14.3 billion). Prior to this, Bengtsson was President and CEO of Betsson AB, a Swedish-listed online gaming group, where he doubled revenue over five years and led multiple acquisitions.
Bengtsson holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University in Canada and currently serves as Chairman of Hostelworld plc, Raketech plc, and Gamenation (UK). He will step down from these roles to relocate to South Africa and assume leadership at Sun International.
Leadership Transition & Future Vision
Bengtsson’s appointment marks the end of Anthony Leeming’s tenure as CEO. Leeming, who has been with Sun International for 26 years and served as Chief Executive since 2017, will step down from his role on July 1, 2025, but will remain with the company until December 31, 2025, to ensure a smooth transition.
Bengtsson expressed his enthusiasm for joining Sun International:
“Sun International is an iconic leisure group with a proud heritage and a unique growth opportunity to become a leading omnichannel player in the rapidly evolving global gaming landscape. I am thrilled to bring my experience and expertise to this fantastic organization and look forward to working with the board and colleagues to drive its continued success.”
Leeming also reflected on his leadership journey:

Board’s Endorsement
Sun International’s Chairman, Sam Sithole, praised Leeming’s leadership and welcomed Bengtsson:
“Anthony has made an indelible mark on Sun International, and we thank him for his 26 years of dedication, particularly his exemplary leadership since 2017. Ulrik brings extensive global experience and a strong track record in delivering results. His leadership will be invaluable as Sun International enters its next phase of growth.”
With Bengtsson at the helm, Sun International aims to strengthen its presence in the global gaming industry while driving innovation and expanding its digital footprint.
