South Africa’s entertainment industry has lost one of its brightest stars. Michelle Botes, celebrated for her unforgettable portrayal of Cherel de Villiers-Haines in Isidingo, passed away on Saturday morning in Cape Town. She was 63 years old.
Botes’ talent agency, Oh Talent Management, confirmed the tragic news, with her agent Suzi Howes expressing deep sorrow. “We are very saddened by the news. She was an icon of our industry. Michelle had grace and a beautiful spirit. She will be greatly missed. Sending our deepest sympathies and condolences to her family and loved ones,” Howes said in a statement.
A Courageous Battle Against Cancer
In July 2022, Botes revealed her diagnosis of advanced multiple myeloma, a rare and incurable form of blood cancer affecting the bone marrow. Despite undergoing rigorous treatment, including chemotherapy, steroids, and a stem cell transplant, her condition worsened. By October 2023, doctors estimated she had only a few months to live due to an alarming rise in her cancer count.
Turning to holistic and less invasive treatments in November, Botes fought bravely but had reportedly weakened in the weeks leading to her passing.
A Legacy of Talent and Awards
Michelle Botes enjoyed a prolific career in South African television, starring in a range of productions, including Seeduiker, Die Swart Kat, Wolwedans in Die Skemer, Konings, Binnelanders, and Legacy.
Her iconic role as Cherel de Villiers-Haines in Isidingo made her a household name. This complex and villainous character earned her three Safta nominations for Best Actress in a TV soap in 2006, 2007, and 2012.
More recently, her portrayal of Angelique Price in the telenovela Legacy garnered further acclaim. Botes won a Golden Horn for Best Supporting Actress in 2021 and followed it with the Best Actress in a Telenovela award in 2023.
In a 2020 interview with Jacaranda FM, Botes shared the toll of playing Cherel, describing it as exhausting. “I was burnt out and had to change my life,” she said, reflecting on the intensity of embodying such a demanding role.
Tributes Pour In
The news of Michelle Botes’ passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans, and organisations.
South African comedian Marc Lottering shared on Instagram: “Just saw her on the cover of a mag yesterday, coupled with an interview about her journey with cancer – a phenomenal woman. Rest In Peace, Michelle.”
Casey B Dolan, a fellow Isidingo actor, wrote: “I worked with Michelle and always had a wonderful time. I’m so sorry to hear of her passing. Love and peace to her family and loved ones.”
Political party Rise Mzansi paid tribute, stating: “Michelle was widely celebrated for her iconic role in Isidingo and her immense contribution to South Africa’s entertainment industry, leaving an indelible mark on television and storytelling.”

Michelle Botes is survived by her two children, Cara and Daniel, whom she shared with her ex-husband, actor Ian Roberts.
