SAPS Arrests 11 Ugandan Nationals for Carrying R3 Million in Fake Money

Eleven Ugandan nationals are set to appear in a Mpumalanga court after being arrested with R3 million in counterfeit South African currency. The arrests were made during Operation Vala Umgodi by vigilant SAPS officers.

In a significant bust by the South African Police Service (SAPS), eleven Ugandan nationals are set to appear in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on charges of possessing R3 million worth of counterfeit South African currency. The suspects, aged between 25 and 45, were apprehended in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, during Operation Vala Umgodi last week.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli reported that the arrests occurred after police officers noticed suspicious individuals carrying five bags. The officers’ keen observation and subsequent search led to the discovery of the counterfeit money.

Mdhluli also noted that none of the arrested individuals possessed valid documentation to be in South Africa, prompting collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs to verify their immigration status. The suspects face charges for possession of counterfeit money and contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa. As investigations continue, additional charges may be filed.

The acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and dedication. “We are really excited by the vigilance displayed by our members and moving in this pace, we are definitely going to bring the levels of crime to its lowest,” Mkhwanazi said.

This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by SAPS to combat crime and ensure the safety and security of South African citizens. The successful operation underscores the importance of diligence and collaboration among law enforcement agencies in tackling complex criminal activities.
