The album, composed and scored by RZA, originally premiered as a ballet performance by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver, Colorado, in 2023.
The 11-track composition is deeply personal, reflecting RZA’s journey from the challenging environment of Staten Island project housing to his current stature as a renowned artist. According to a press release, the album weaves together themes of love, loss, exploration, and Buddhist philosophy, symbolizing a journey “through mud.”
RZA began working on “A Ballet Through Mud” during the pandemic, drawing inspiration from notebooks filled with lyrics he wrote as a teenager. “I have been composing my whole life, although I didn’t know initially that was what I was doing,” RZA explained. “The inspiration for ‘A Ballet Through Mud’ comes from my earliest creative output as a teenager, but its themes are universal—love, exploration, and adventure.”
He hopes the album will resonate with listeners on a personal level. “I hope people use it to score their own lives, to transform a drive to the grocery store or sharing a meal with loved ones into something magical, to be inspired and let their imaginations take them into a different chamber, if only for a moment.”
