Rassie Erasmus, the celebrated coach of the Springboks, has been recognised for his outstanding role in fostering unity and pride in South Africa. This accolade was presented to him by the FW de Klerk Foundation, which has been awarding individuals or organisations who contribute significantly to promoting goodwill and solidarity among South Africans. Established in 2010, the award highlights individuals who work towards building a cohesive and harmonious nation.
Earlier this year, Erasmus received an honorary doctorate in coaching science from North West University for his remarkable achievements in uniting South Africans during the Rugby World Cup. Under his leadership, the Springboks not only clinched back-to-back World Cup victories, but also played a vital role in strengthening the social fabric of the nation. Erasmus continues his efforts in 2024, inspiring South Africans to stay united, while emphasising the strength found in the collective spirit of his multicultural team, which embodies Nelson Mandela’s vision of a Rainbow Nation.
The FW de Klerk Foundation applauded the Springbok coach, noting that his role has been instrumental in inspiring people from all walks of life, instilling national pride, and promoting nation-building. “His coaching embodies the values of non-racialism, meritocracy, humility, and patriotism,” the foundation stated. “The Springboks’ victories continue to unite South Africans in celebration, while also offering vital lessons on mutual respect, teamwork, discipline, and leadership.”
Erasmus expressed his gratitude for the award on X, acknowledging the support of South Africans who inspire him and his team. “Thank you to the FW de Klerk Foundation & the Boks for this great honour!! It feels ‘unfair’ getting recognition for something you love and enjoy so much. Thanks to all the South Africans who support and inspire us to deliver. This is a tribute to you,” he wrote.
As the Springboks aim for an unprecedented third consecutive World Cup win, Erasmus’ leadership continues to make waves. In 2024, he introduced 50 players during the Test season, building a new squad with a clear focus on the future. So far, his strategy has been fruitful, with the team achieving an impressive 11 wins from 13 Tests.
