Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has brushed off ongoing speculation about his marriage to Meghan Markle, showing his trademark wit and composure during a recent interview. Speaking at The New York Times 2024 DealBook Summit on December 4, Harry tackled the rumours head-on, dispelling notions of marital trouble with humour and sincerity.
In the interview, Andrew Ross Sorkin, a NYT columnist, brought up the constant media fascination with Harry and Meghan’s relationship. Sorkin mentioned the attention surrounding their independent engagements, highlighting articles questioning why Meghan was in California while Harry was in New York. Harry, never one to miss a chance for humour, replied, “Because you invited me, you should have known!”
On a more serious note, the Spare author commented on the relentless speculation. “Apparently, we’ve bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well,” he joked. The father of two explained that while the attention isn’t ideal, he’s learned to ignore it. He even expressed pity for online trolls, quipping, “Their hopes are built and built, and then it doesn’t happen. I feel sorry for them. Genuinely, I do.”
The Sussex family—Harry, Meghan, and their children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3—reside in Montecito, California. On the day of Harry’s summit, Meghan attended the Paley Honors in Beverly Hills, reflecting their shared ability to manage their high-profile lives independently while supporting one another.
Meghan, in a separate CBS Sunday Morning interview, spoke openly about her struggles living in the U.K. She revealed battling suicidal thoughts and enduring bullying due to intense media scrutiny. “When you’ve been through any level of pain or trauma, I believe part of our healing journey, certainly part of mine, is being able to be really open about it,” she shared.
Despite the chatter surrounding them, the Sussexes continue to focus on their family and advocacy work, showing resilience amid the noise.
