Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman and legendary singer Al Green rang in the New Year with a heartfelt duet at Mississippi’s iconic Ground Zero Blues Club.
Morgan Freeman, 87, made a dream come true on New Year’s Eve when he joined soul music legend Al Green, 78, for a memorable performance of “Let’s Stay Together.” The event unfolded at Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi—a venue Freeman co-founded in 2001.
A Night to Remember
Wearing dapper New Year’s Eve suits, the two icons shared the stage in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Green performed his iconic 1971 hit while Freeman confidently sang the chorus, matching the energy of the night. On New Year’s Day, Freeman shared photos from the event, giving a nod to blues musician Kingfish, who also performed during the celebration.
CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez was at the club earlier that afternoon, where Freeman reflected on the venue’s beginnings and its role in preserving the Delta’s blues heritage.
Preserving the Blues
Freeman recounted a conversation with Clarksdale’s then-mayor, who noted the absence of a consistent blues club scene. Determined to address this, Freeman collaborated with Howard Stovall, Eric Meier, and the late Bill Luckett to establish Ground Zero Blues Club. The venue is dedicated to celebrating Mississippi’s rich blues history and fostering the genre for future generations.
“There wasn’t a reliable place for people to experience authentic blues,” Freeman explained. “So we decided to create a space that honors this music and its roots.”
A Legacy of Music
Since its opening, Ground Zero Blues Club has become a beacon for blues lovers worldwide, hosting renowned artists and emerging talents. Freeman’s impromptu duet with Al Green adds another layer of charm to the venue’s storied history.
For fans of Freeman, Green, and the blues, this magical New Year’s Eve performance serves as a powerful reminder of the genre’s enduring legacy and its ability to bring people together.
