The KwaZulu-Natal police have suspended officers who misused a state vehicle to escort a learner to their matric dance in Estcourt, sparking public outrage after the incident was caught on video.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, shows officers using a police vehicle to provide a blue-light escort for a colleague’s child attending the matric dance at Estcourt High School.
Officers Suspended and Ordered to Repay Costs
Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the Provincial Commissioner of KZN police, confirmed on 28 August that the officers have been suspended pending an internal misconduct investigation.
“I have instructed the District Commissioner of Uthukela to ensure urgent disciplinary steps are taken against the officers involved,” said Mkhwanazi.
He further ordered that the financial loss to the state be calculated and recovered. This includes fuel costs, vehicle usage, and state time wasted during the unauthorised activity.
Negligence of Duty
Police spokespersons said the incident highlighted negligence, as the officers prioritised personal errands over core duties such as visible policing, responding to community complaints, and ensuring public safety.
Mkhwanazi stressed that such conduct cannot be tolerated:
“We cannot afford to have police officers who report for duty but use state resources for personal gain. Anyone found misusing vehicles, stationery, or any state property will face disciplinary processes, criminal charges, and possible dismissal.”
Upholding Professionalism
The commissioner reminded police members of their responsibility to uphold professionalism and protect the credibility of the service.
He condemned the actions as “gallivanting with state resources” and reiterated that such behaviour undermines the SAPS’s mandate to serve and protect communities.
