Maftown Heights 2024: Iconic Festival Returns with ‘NuTswako’ Talent

After months of anticipation, the Maftown Heights Festival has officially announced its return, setting the stage for an unforgettable reunion on November 29. The iconic event will take place at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, promising to reignite the spirit of Motswako with a fresh blend of legendary icons and up-and-coming talent.

This year’s edition of Maftown Heights marks a significant comeback, bringing together the pioneers of Motswako with a new generation of artists. For fans who cherished the festival’s golden years, it’s a chance to relive history while embracing the future of this vibrant hip-hop culture.

The announcement follows the success of Maftown Heights Untold Stories, a four-part documentary created by acclaimed rapper Khuli Chana. Released in June 2024, the series explored the festival’s journey, highlighting its cultural significance and immense impact. This positive reception inspired the Maftown Heights team to come back from a brief hiatus, ready to celebrate the legacy of Motswako.

A Day to Celebrate Hip-Hop and Motswako Culture

Maftown Heights 2024 promises a day of festivities that pay tribute to South Africa’s hip-hop culture and the Motswako movement. Since its inception, the festival has been a central platform for showcasing some of the country’s greatest musical talents, including the late HHP, AKA, and Riky Rick. Over the years, it has evolved into a symbol of creativity, unity, and cultural pride.

This year, Maftown Heights is bigger and bolder, blending its legendary past with an exciting future. It will introduce “NuTswako” artists—new talents shaping the sound of Motswako for the next generation. Maglera Doe Boy will curate the festival alongside Khuli Chana, a co-founder of the event and one of the movement’s most influential figures.

“We are thrilled to return with a reunion edition of Maftown Heights,” said Khuli Chana and Refiloe Ramogase, the festival’s co-founders. “This festival is more than just an event; it’s a movement that continues to inspire and shape youth culture in South Africa.”

Fusion of Music, Fashion, and Food

Beyond the music, Maftown Heights will offer a rich fusion of fashion, food, and cultural expression. The festival embodies the spirit of unity and creativity that defines the Motswako movement, with immersive experiences designed to bring this magic to life.

Festival goers can expect a lineup that not only celebrates South Africa’s top hip-hop artists but also showcases the new wave of talent keeping the culture alive. As Chana and Ramogase noted, “This reunion is a reflection on the Motswako journey, and it’s also about celebrating the next generation that will carry the torch forward.”
