Longwe Twala, son of renowned musician and producer Sello “Chicco” Twala, was released on a warning by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday. This comes after he was charged with breaking into his father’s home in September and allegedly stealing items worth over R200,000.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
Initially released on a warning last month, Twala was arrested again on 26 November for contempt of court. He failed to appear for a scheduled hearing, citing illness as the reason for his absence. Twala claimed he informed his aunt, who he believed had notified his legal representatives.
Although no evidence supported his claim, the court deemed his explanation plausible and granted him a release on strict conditions.
Conditions of Release
To remain free on warning, Longwe Twala must adhere to the following conditions:
- House Arrest: He must stay at his Diepkloof, Soweto residence between 6 pm and 6 am.
- Sobriety: The use of drugs and alcohol is strictly prohibited.
- Non-Interference: He is forbidden from contacting witnesses, directly or indirectly.
- Restricted Access: He cannot visit the complainant’s home or workplace until the trial concludes.
- Compliance Testing: Twala must undergo drug and alcohol testing at any time.
A breach of any of these conditions could result in bail revocation and sentencing.
Next Court Appearance
Twala is set to return to court on 5 February 2024, where the case will continue. The charges stem from allegations of theft at his father’s home, an incident that has drawn public attention given the family’s prominence in South Africa’s entertainment industry.
The court’s decision to release Twala under strict conditions reflects its attempt to balance his rights with the seriousness of the charges and the need for justice.
