John Steenhuisen Criticizes Ramaphosa’s Decision to Sign BELA Bill into Law

The leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), John Steenhuisen, has expressed his displeasure with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s intention to sign the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill into law. The DA has been vocal in its opposition to the bill, which they believe will negatively affect the rights of learners, particularly regarding mother-tongue education.

DA Opposes BELA Bill

The DA took to its official X account, @Our_DA, to voice its concerns, stating that the BELA Bill goes against the principles set out in the Government of National Unity’s Statement of Intent. The party has raised concerns over the constitutional implications of the bill, particularly for learners’ right to be educated in their mother tongue.

According to reports, Ramaphosa is expected to sign the bill on 13 September, despite the DA’s objections. Steenhuisen, who has been leading the opposition against the bill, emphasized that he intends to submit amendments for the president’s consideration. He argues that the bill, in its current form, jeopardizes not only mother-tongue education but also the overall framework of the Government of National Unity.

Steenhuisen’s Response

In a public statement, Steenhuisen said, “During the negotiations, the DA made it clear that the BELA Bill was unacceptable to us in its current form because it has constitutional implications for the right to mother-tongue education, amongst other issues.” He warned that the bill’s passing would have long-lasting effects on the education system and the unity of the nation.

The DA believes that changes are essential to ensure the bill aligns with constitutional rights and upholds the value of linguistic diversity in South Africa’s education system.
