The Mayor of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, has made a bold move by firing Kabelo Gwamanda, the embattled Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, following his arrest last month on fraud charges. In an official statement, the mayor’s office confirmed that the dismissal is effective immediately. This decision underscores the city’s commitment to maintaining smooth service delivery and ensuring uninterrupted operations for its residents.
Gwamanda, a former mayoral candidate, faced serious allegations after being arrested in October over claims of a fraudulent funeral policy scheme. The 39-year-old had reportedly set up the scam in Soweto during 2011 and 2012, targeting vulnerable communities with fake funeral insurance. The matter has raised significant concern about the integrity of public officials and their responsibility to the citizens they serve.
Tebogo Nkonkou, a Patriotic Alliance councillor, will replace Gwamanda in the role of MMC for Community Development. The appointment comes as part of Morero’s ongoing efforts to restore confidence in the administration and address any potential disruptions in the city’s community services.
In his statement, Morero expressed full confidence in Nkonkou’s abilities, highlighting his dedication and commitment to improving the lives of Johannesburg’s residents. The mayor reiterated the city’s determination to ensure the continuous provision of quality services, a promise that remains central to the administration’s goals.
As Gwamanda’s dismissal marks a significant shift in Johannesburg’s leadership, the city will now look to Nkonkou to stabilize the Community Development portfolio and address the needs of the people.
