As New York Fashion Week sets the stage for new trends, a powerful collaboration is taking fashion beyond the runway and into the cultural zeitgeist. On February 12, Gap announced its latest partnership with Harlem’s Fashion Row (HFR), an agency dedicated to bridging the gap between emerging Black and brown designers and major brands.
The collection, which debuts on February 14, features 16 statement pieces priced between ZAR 1,690 and ZAR 2,450, created by an all-star lineup of designers: A.Potts, BruceGlen, KAPHILL, N’Gai, and Richfresh. From reimagined white button-down shirts to edgy hoodies and statement jackets, the collection merges Gap’s timeless style with the bold creativity of Black fashion.
HFR’s Founder on Purpose, Passion, and Progress
For Brandice Daniel, CEO and founder of HFR, this collaboration is more than just another partnership—it’s a mission.
“When you’re chasing purpose, it doesn’t feel like it’s been this long,” Daniel reflects. “I feel just as passionate about what I’m doing today as I did in 2007. I’m grateful for this entire journey.”
Through HFR, Daniel has spent nearly two decades championing underrepresented designers and ensuring that Black fashion, creativity, and culture are celebrated on a global stage. The Gap collaboration, she says, is another step toward shifting the fashion industry’s landscape.
A Collection That Redefines Classics
At the heart of the Gap × HFR collection is a deep respect for both classic American fashion and Black cultural influence.
“We really wanted to redefine iconic Gap pieces and bring something unexpected, interesting, and fun,” says Daniel. “No matter your style, there’s something for everyone in this collection.”
One standout piece? The reimagined white button-down shirt—a staple that Daniel describes as a versatile, timeless must-have.
“A white button-down works in any situation—whether you’re heading out for the evening or into a boardroom,” she says. “These will be the pieces people can seamlessly transition from work to a night out.”
Each designer in the collection brings a unique voice to the table:
- KAPHILL blends Victorian and feminine influences with bold self-expression.
- A.Potts delivers avant-garde utility with dramatic silhouettes.
- Richfresh infuses preppy tailoring into streetwear staples.
- BruceGlen, led by twin brothers, makes a statement with vibrant, eclectic colors.
- N’Gai elevates denim and indigo with deep cultural roots.
Authenticity at the Core
Unlike many mainstream collaborations, which sometimes dilute cultural influence in the name of mass appeal, Daniel assures that this collection is rooted in authenticity.
“We are intentional about the brands we work with, and Gap was genuinely excited to let these designers bring their full creativity,” she explains.
Zac Posen, Executive Vice President and Creative Director of Gap Inc., was actively involved, attending design sessions and supporting the designers’ visions.
“No one was asked to tone down their vision. Everyone was encouraged to bring their full creativity,” Daniel emphasizes.
Beyond Fashion: A Commitment to Inclusion
Gap’s partnership with HFR isn’t new—the brand first collaborated with the agency in 2019 and has since deepened its commitment to diversity and inclusion in fashion. In 2022, Gap donated ZAR 9.5 million in scholarships to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), supporting the next generation of Black designers.
This dedication stands out, especially as many retailers scale back diversity initiatives. Daniel applauds Gap’s consistency:
“We get to collaborate with brands that truly celebrate all people. This moment is about showcasing these designers, sharing their stories, and amplifying their power,” she says. “It’s a testament to the strength of community.”
Opening Doors for Future Generations
For Daniel, this collaboration is just one of many milestones in a larger movement.
“Every time we do a collaboration and it’s incredibly successful, it opens doors for more opportunities—not just for these designers, but for the next generation,” she says.
With its mix of cultural heritage, bold design, and classic appeal, the Gap × HFR collection is poised to make a lasting impact.
Shoppers can explore and purchase the collection on gap.com and in select Gap stores starting February 14.
