Johannesburg creative and broadcaster Nick Explicit, real name Nikolay Karaush, sat down with Conversations with Kim and Kwaledi to reflect on his inspiring journey from an aspiring rapper to an award-winning radio presenter. The interview explored his early struggles, passion for music, transition into radio, and how staying grounded has helped him evolve across industries.
He described growing up in Johannesburg, where dedication to his craft started early. In high school, he would walk 9 kilometers to school to save on transport money — not out of necessity alone, but so he could put that money toward buying vinyl records and building his music collection. It was an early example of the type of focus and sacrifice that would define his path.
Nick matriculated from Highlands North Boys’ High in 2004 before pursuing Multimedia, Design and Web Development at College Campus. While music was always central to his identity, it was at UJFM where his voice began reaching larger audiences. There, he was part of a team that was nominated five times for the MTN Radio Awards and eventually won recognition for Best Presenter and Best Field Report on campus radio.
The transition from musician to broadcaster wasn’t easy. Like many in creative industries, he faced multiple rejections and setbacks before gaining traction. His work ethic and authenticity eventually led him to 947, one of South Africa’s leading radio stations, where he has been on air since 2014 hosting shows like Top40 Vibes and Daybreak.
What sets Nick apart isn’t just the consistency of his presence in radio, but the grounded, multi-dimensional approach he brings to the table. While his music continues under the Les Artistes Records label, he has also built a parallel career in property entrepreneurship through PN Commercial, his real estate venture.
The conversation also touched on challenges in today’s media industry, particularly for emerging talent. Nick reflected on how success in entertainment often seems more dependent on social media following than skill, something that can discourage upcoming creatives. While he acknowledges the changing landscape, he emphasized the importance of remembering one’s purpose — a reminder that growth takes time and authenticity still matters.
His journey is a testament to those values. From long commutes on foot to earning his place on national airwaves, Nick has remained focused on building a legacy that merges creativity with business acumen. It’s a message of inspiration not just for artists and broadcasters, but for anyone navigating the complexities of modern success.
Nick Explicit continues to shape conversations in music and media while creating opportunities beyond the mic — proving that staying rooted in purpose can carry you further than trends ever will.
