Vosloorus residents have cast doubt on the alleged attack against controversial businessman Brown Mogotsi, claiming that he may have shot his own car.
According to one witness, there were no other vehicles in sight when gunfire erupted around Mogotsi’s red Chevrolet on Monday night in the East Rand. “We didn’t see any other cars or people around. It looked like he shot at his own car,” the witness told local reporters.
Mogotsi, who is linked to alleged police corruption and has been mentioned in ongoing probes by the Madlanga Commission, claimed he was ambushed by unknown gunmen. Around 11 bullets struck his car, but he emerged unharmed, and police found no traces of blood inside the vehicle.
He was expected to open a case at the Vosloorus Police Station on Tuesday but failed to appear.
Law enforcement sources say they are not ruling out the possibility that the alleged shooting was staged. “A case of attempted murder has been opened, but all angles are being investigated,” a police spokesperson confirmed.
The alleged attack comes as Mogotsi faces mounting scrutiny from both the Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, which are probing claims of corruption and undue influence within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Police investigations continue.
