Denzel Washington has revealed a deeply personal milestone, marking ten years of sobriety this December. The 69-year-old actor, known for his legendary performances and upcoming role in Gladiator II, opened up about his wellness journey and past struggles in a recent Esquire cover story.
Reflecting on his decision to quit drinking at age 60, Washington admitted, “I’ve done a lot of damage to the body. I stopped at sixty, and I haven’t had a thimble’s worth since. Things are opening up for me now—like being seventy. It’s real, and it’s okay. This is the last chapter—if I get another thirty years, what do I want to do?”
Washington credited his wellness transformation to his friend and “little brother,” rock icon Lenny Kravitz. Kravitz, whom Washington described as “another man of God,” introduced him to a trainer last year. The trainer helped him overhaul his fitness routine and diet. Now weighing just over 190 pounds and aiming for 185, the actor reflected on his progress: “I feel like I’m getting strong. Strong is important.”
Looking back at older photos, particularly from the Academy Awards for Macbeth, Washington shared how his appearance motivated him. “I was just looking fat, with this dyed hair, and I said, ‘Those days are over, man.’”
Though wine was once his vice, Washington acknowledged its “very tricky” nature and shared memories of his extensive wine collection. He also candidly discussed experimenting with substances in the past, clarifying, “I never got strung out on heroin, coke, or liquor. I shot dope just like they shot dope, but I never got strung out.”
Washington’s resilience and introspection come as he prepares for what he calls his “last chapter.” Beyond Gladiator II, fans can look forward to his upcoming role in Spike Lee’s action-thriller High and Low.
Here’s to many more years of health, strength, and unforgettable performances from the Hollywood legend.
