Denzel Washington on Collaborating with Tony and Ridley Scott

Denzel Washington’s illustrious career has seen him partner with some of the most influential filmmakers in the industry, and few have had as significant an impact on his filmography as the late Tony Scott and his equally iconic brother, Ridley Scott. Over the years, Washington and Tony Scott crafted a series of unforgettable films, from the intense drama of Man On Fire to the gripping suspense of Crimson Tide, and their creative synergy was evident in each project they tackled together. Unfortunately, this dynamic partnership was cut short by Tony Scott’s untimely death in 2012.

Now, Denzel Washington is rekindling his connection with the Scott family by stepping into ancient Roman garb for Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated Gladiator II. This marks their first collaboration since the critically acclaimed American Gangster in 2007. In this new venture, Washington takes on the role of Macrinus, a powerful and ambitious arms dealer with imperial aspirations. As he explained to Empire Magazine in an exclusive interview, Macrinus is “willing to do anything to get there,” making for a character that is sure to add depth and tension to the historical epic.

Reflecting on his experiences working with both Scott brothers, Washington is clear about one thing: both are exceptional filmmakers in their own right. “I don’t compare directors,” he shared. “You see the different personalities. I suppose they do [have similarities]. On the days when we’re shooting, I’m busy with what I’m doing. So I’m not comparing this one to that one, but obviously, both are great filmmakers. They can’t miss.”

For Washington, the allure of Gladiator II wasn’t just in the role itself, but in the opportunity to work with Ridley Scott once more. The sequel, set over two decades after the original, centers on Lucius, portrayed by Paul Mescal, as he steps into the brutal world of the Colosseum. Washington, known for being selective with his roles, was immediately drawn to the project. “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley,” he remarked.

Their previous collaboration on American Gangster left a lasting impression on Washington, contributing to his excitement for this new film. “We had a great go-round the first go-round [on American Gangster], and here we are.” And it seems that Ridley Scott, despite the passage of nearly two decades, has lost none of his passion or creative energy. “He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film. He’s an inspiration,” Washington says of the legendary director. “We should all want to feel like that at 86.”

As Gladiator II gears up for release, there’s no doubt that the reunion of Washington and Scott is something to look forward to. Whether working with Tony or Ridley, Denzel Washington’s collaborations with the Scott brothers have always delivered cinematic gold.
