President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a stark warning that global peace will remain elusive unless the United Nations (UN) undergoes significant reform. He delivered this message on 18 November at the G20 Leaders Summit, where he presented South Africa’s statement.
Ramaphosa emphasised the critical need for the UN to reclaim its status as the cornerstone of multilateralism. He noted that the organisation’s credibility has been eroded by powerful states bypassing or weakening its resolutions, particularly in the Security Council. This, he said, undermines its role in promoting global stability.
Urgent Call for Modernisation
According to Ramaphosa, transforming the UN into a modern, efficient, and action-oriented institution is essential to addressing global challenges effectively. Failure to do so, he warned, would lead to continued threats to global peace and security.
He also linked the UN’s reform to broader development goals, stating that without these changes, efforts to eradicate poverty and underdevelopment will remain unattainable.
South Africa’s Commitment
Concluding his speech, Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s dedication to strengthening and reforming the multilateral system. He stressed the importance of adapting these institutions to reflect current global realities, ensuring they can address the pressing issues of the modern world.
