In the heart of Mabopane, local entrepreneur Hilda Phaloane, affectionately known as Snocky, is keeping the art of traditional leather shoemaking alive through her business, BH Enterprise.
Founded in 2018, BH Enterprise specialises in handmade leather shoes, particularly the iconic Veldskoene — often referred to locally as vellies. These durable leather shoes have long been associated with farmers and outdoor workers across South Africa.
For Snocky, the inspiration behind her craft runs deep.
Raised in a farming family, she grew up watching her father work the land and developed an appreciation for the strong, durable leather shoes worn by farmers. She also admired classic Buccaneer school shoes, known for their long-lasting quality and sturdy leather.
“I loved how those shoes lasted,” she recalls. “The leather quality was strong, and they were built to endure.”
That early admiration eventually turned into a passion for shoemaking.
However, the journey into the craft was not easy. At the time, there were no formal schools in Pretoria offering shoemaking training, but Snocky remained determined to learn. Her breakthrough came when she met a shoemaker in Alexandra Township, who shared his skills and helped her master the art of making leather footwear.
Today, BH Enterprise produces handmade Buccaneer-style shoes in a variety of colours, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design. This colourful twist on a classic shoe has become the brand’s unique niche, blending fashion with durability.
Each pair of shoes is crafted with care and attention to detail, with prices ranging from R500 to R2,000, depending on the style and custom specifications requested by customers.
