With the US presidential election approaching, security concerns are on the rise as reports indicate Donald Trump’s supporters, including the far-right group Proud Boys, are preparing for possible interference in the voting process. Washington and more than 20 states are gearing up by deploying National Guard troops and other security measures, fearing protests and even violent outbreaks in response to the election results.
According to sources, a network with 500,000 members stands ready to take action on Election Day. Their strategy reportedly includes monitoring polling stations, challenging results in areas where Trump does not emerge victorious, and possibly escalating actions. The Proud Boys, an openly right-wing group, have urged their members to be prepared with arms and are expected to show up at polling locations, potentially heightening tensions.
As a proactive measure, over 20 states have requested National Guard presence in Washington, D.C., and these resources will remain on standby if required. Although D.C. itself hasn’t issued a formal request for troop deployment, security officials are seriously considering increased protection, especially as the certification of election results and the presidential inauguration approach. The anticipated peak of tension could coincide with Congress certifying the results on January 6, a historically procedural event that may see unprecedented levels of security.
Fears of political violence are heightened in key swing states, where the vote margins are expected to be slim, and any contesting of results could significantly influence the outcome.
