uMhlanga’s Mushroom Lounge Receives Prestigious New York Invitation to Showcase African Cuisine

Mushroom Lounge, a relatively new restaurant located on uMhlanga’s Chartwell Drive, has been extended an exciting invitation to showcase its African traditional cuisine in New York from September 22 to 26. The eatery, which has yet to celebrate its first anniversary, has quickly risen to prominence, earning recognition far beyond its local surroundings.

The opportunity was facilitated by an American delegation that attended the Resurgence conference in Durban this July. After the conference, the delegation, alongside Durban City Manager Musa Mbhele and Deputy Mayor Zandile Gumede, visited the restaurant, where they experienced Mushroom Lounge’s unique traditional offerings. Restaurant owner, Sibongiseni Mageza Mbambo, expressed his surprise and excitement over the invitation, especially since his establishment is still in its infancy.

“I am truly overwhelmed and short of words to express my gratitude to all those who have supported us,” Mbambo said. “This invitation is a testament to our hard work and the incredible support from the community. I am especially thankful to the City of Durban for bringing the delegation to our restaurant and to the American delegates for facilitating this extraordinary opportunity.”

The invitation extends to Mbambo’s staff and chefs, providing them with a platform to showcase their culinary skills on an international stage. Mbambo believes this could be a gateway to new business ventures in New York, as interest in his unique African dishes grows. In addition to the international opportunity, Mbambo has been receiving calls from Gauteng and Cape Town, with many urging him to expand his restaurant to these provinces.

Mbambo also expressed his deep appreciation to Zulu King Misuzulu, who visited Mushroom Lounge in April. Mbambo attributes part of his recent success to the king’s blessings. During the visit, King Misuzulu, accompanied by his traditional prime minister Thulasizwe Buthelezi and senior Prince Simphiwe Zulu, praised the restaurant for its authentic traditional menu, including dishes such as Zulu boiled chicken and tripe, which reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Zulu nation.

Despite this being his first venture into hospitality, Mbambo is no stranger to event management. He has been heavily involved in organizing Durban’s popular Maskandi festival, Impucuzeko, held annually at Moses Mabhida’s People’s Park. He also plays a significant role in hosting the annual Gcwalisa All White Picnic at Kings Park Stadium’s outer fields.

This exciting international opportunity marks a significant milestone for Mushroom Lounge and could serve as a stepping stone for further expansion and recognition of traditional African cuisine on a global scale.
