The 30th South African Music Awards (Samas) will see iconic artists Tyla, Sipho Makhabane, and Ringo Madlingozi receiving prestigious accolades for their remarkable contributions to music. This year’s highly anticipated event is set for November 2 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, bringing the spotlight on both local and international achievements in the South African music industry.
Tyla Shines on the Global Stage
South African export and rising star, Tyla, is poised to receive the Best International Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony. Announcing the honour, the Samas posted: “Tyla has taken the music world by storm, earning numerous local and international accolades.” Tyla’s impressive list of achievements includes a Grammy for Best African Music Performance, a BET Award for Best International Act and Best New Artist, and a VMA for Best Afrobeats. Furthermore, she recently bagged the Basadi in Music Award for Highest Airplay.
Tyla’s global presence continues to grow as she proudly represents South African music on the international stage. As the lead nominee at the 2024 Samas, she has five nods, including Album of the Year, Best Female Artist of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Best Pop Album, and Best Collaboration for her hit single “Water” with Travis Scott. With each accomplishment, Tyla solidifies her position as a trailblazer in the industry, inspiring artists back home and making waves abroad.
Honouring the Legends: Sipho Makhabane and Ringo Madlingozi
This year’s Samas will also pay tribute to two legends in South African music. Gospel giant Sipho Makhabane and beloved singer Ringo Madlingozi will be honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Makhabane, a central figure in South African gospel music, is being recognised for his tremendous impact on the genre. Despite retiring in 2010, Makhabane has remained deeply involved in the industry, mentoring young talent and helping shape the future of gospel music. His dedication to uplifting others and his extensive musical contributions make him a deserving recipient of this accolade. “We are incredibly proud to honour Sipho Makhabane for his contribution to South African music,” said the Samas in their announcement.
Meanwhile, Ringo Madlingozi, with his soulful rhythms and profound messages of love, unity, and hope, will also receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. With 15 albums and collaborations with musical icons such as Miriam Makeba and UB40, Ringo has left an indelible mark on South African music. His influence has extended far beyond his own work, as he has also mentored and uplifted young talent within his community.
The Samas praised his lasting legacy, stating, “We are honoured to celebrate his legacy and contributions to South African music.”
A Night to Celebrate South African Music
The 2024 Samas promise to be a night filled with pride, recognition, and celebration as South African talent, both new and established, take centre stage. Tyla’s rise to international fame, Sipho Makhabane’s devotion to gospel music, and Ringo Madlingozi’s legacy of love and unity reflect the rich diversity of South African music. With this year’s nominees and honourees, it’s clear that South Africa’s musical contributions are being celebrated both at home and on the global stage.
