Time Magazine Crowns 15-Year-Old Herman Bekele as 2024 Kid of the Year

In a remarkable achievement, 15-year-old Herman Bekele, a budding scientist with a passion for innovation, has been named Time Magazine’s 2024 Kid of the Year. The young prodigy recently gained widespread recognition for his groundbreaking invention—a soap that has the potential to treat and prevent multiple forms of skin cancer.

Bekele’s journey into the world of science began at the tender age of seven, when he first started experimenting with basic household chemicals. Reflecting on his early days, he shared, “My first potions were just dish soap, laundry detergent, and common household chemicals. I would hide them under my bed and see what would happen if I left them overnight. There was a lot of mixing together completely at random.”

Over the years, Bekele’s curiosity and dedication to science only grew stronger. His hard work culminated in his victory at the Young Scientist Challenge, where his innovative soap won him a grand prize of R466,000 ($25,000). This invention, a simple yet potentially life-saving soap, represents a significant advancement in the fight against skin cancer.

“I’m really passionate about skin-cancer research,” Bekele explained. “It’s incredible to think that one day my bar of soap could make a direct impact on somebody’s life. That’s the reason I started this all in the first place.”

Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Bekele’s awareness of the dangers posed by ultraviolet radiation grew after moving to the United States. This inspired him to focus his research on skin cancer, particularly in relation to prolonged sun exposure.

Despite his impressive achievements in science, Bekele ensures he maintains a balance between work and play. He is an active member of his school’s marching band, where he plays both the flute and trombone. Additionally, he enjoys playing basketball, reading fantasy novels, and playing chess.

Herman Bekele’s recognition as Time Magazine’s 2024 Kid of the Year not only highlights his scientific achievements but also serves as an inspiration to young innovators around the world. His story is a testament to the power of curiosity, passion, and perseverance.
