The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has issued a warning about more severe weather expected this weekend. Heavy rain and snowfall are anticipated in parts of KZN, Free State, and Eastern Cape, with the potential to bring disruption and further damage to already affected areas.
According to the MEC’s statement, the South African Weather Service predicts extremely cold conditions on Monday and Tuesday next week, with snowfall likely around the Drakensberg mountains. The districts that may be affected include Harry Gwala, uThukela, uMgungundlovu, and Amajuba. The department has been in close contact with the weather service, ensuring constant monitoring of the situation. Although this forecast is still preliminary, more updates are expected soon.
This warning comes as many regions are still recovering from the last snowfall. Reports indicate that some farmers in Qwaqwa and Harrismith, near the N3 highway, have lost livestock due to the recent cold front. Assessments are still being conducted to determine the full extent of the damage.
The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is already on alert and in coordination with municipalities, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to ensure preparedness in case conditions worsen. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and monitor reliable weather forecasts for updates.
Further information will be shared by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs as it becomes available.
