Pravin Gordhan Hospitalised, Family Requests Privacy

Former South African Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, has been admitted to hospital, his family confirmed in a statement released last night.

“The family of the former minister of public enterprises, Mr Pravin Gordhan, would like to inform the media and the public that he has been admitted to hospital. Mr Gordhan is receiving the best available medical care. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time,” read the statement.

The family assured the public that updates on his condition would be provided as they became available.

Gordhan, a seasoned politician, played a key role in South Africa’s political landscape during the Struggle against apartheid. In May this year, he announced his retirement from politics, stepping away after decades of service.

As the former Minister of Public Enterprises, Gordhan has faced health challenges in recent years. Last year, in August 2023, he cited ill health as the reason for not attending a parliamentary meeting concerning allegations related to the South African Airways (SAA) sale. The SAA-Takatso deal, which raised concerns of irregularities, had drawn attention from the Committee on Public Enterprises. An investigation into the matter was recommended by the Special Investigating Unit.

In his written response to the committee, Gordhan stated, “I have been advised this evening not to travel by air by a specialist doctor. I therefore request the committee to provide me with an alternative date to enable me to respond to the allegations.”

Gordhan’s extensive career includes a notable role in the South African Revenue Service (SARS). He served as Deputy Commissioner from 1998 to 1999, and in 1999, he was appointed Commissioner of SARS, a post he held with distinction. His contributions to the country’s tax and revenue service reforms remain significant to this day.

As Gordhan continues to receive medical care, the public will await further updates on his condition. For now, the family has asked for privacy to navigate this challenging time.
