Police are searching for the criminal masterminds behind two drug shipments worth nearly R2.8 million intercepted this week at O. R. Tambo International Airport.
Authorities say the narcotics were discovered during routine inspections at cargo warehouses, raising concerns about international drug trafficking networks attempting to move drugs through South Africa’s busiest airport.
Crystal Meth Shipment Worth R2.2 Million
The first seizure took place on Wednesday when officers uncovered crystal meth valued at approximately R2.2 million.
The drugs were discovered during a routine inspection at a cargo facility at the airport.
According to investigators, the shipment was destined for the Philippines, suggesting the involvement of an international trafficking operation.
Police say further investigations are underway to identify the individuals responsible for arranging the shipment and coordinating the export.
Second Bust Uncovers Dagga Shipment
A second drug bust followed the next day.
On Thursday, police discovered eight large boxes containing dagga worth about R672,000 at another cargo warehouse at the airport.
Authorities believe the two shipments may be linked to organised criminal networks operating through cargo transport channels.
Investigation Targets Drug Trafficking Networks
Investigators are now working to identify the individuals and syndicates behind the shipments.
Police suspect that larger criminal networks may be using cargo facilities to move drugs internationally while attempting to avoid detection.
The case forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to disrupt drug trafficking routes passing through major transport hubs such as OR Tambo International Airport.
Authorities say more arrests could follow as the investigation continues.
