A senior official from the North West Department of Agriculture has appeared in court after allegedly accepting bribes in exchange for influencing a government tender.
Seabelo Lebitse (43) appeared before the Potchefstroom Magistrates Court on 31 March, facing three counts of corruption.
Alleged Bribes Linked to Tender Award
According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the case dates back to a 2020 tender process.
Investigators allege that Lebitse approached a service provider and offered to assist in securing a tender—on condition that he received financial benefits.
The alleged payments include:
- R10,000 for vehicle tyres
- Additional payments of R2,000 and R1,000
These payments were reportedly made before the service provider was awarded a contract linked to:
- Construction of a tunnel
- Installation of fishponds
Hawks Lead Investigation
Hawks spokesperson Tinyiko Mathebula confirmed that the arrest followed a detailed investigation by the unit’s Serious Corruption Investigation team in Klerksdorp.
Authorities say the case highlights ongoing efforts to clamp down on corruption in public procurement processes.
Bail Granted, Case Postponed
Lebitse was granted bail of R5,000, with the matter postponed to 7 May.
The case will continue at the Klerksdorp Magistrates Court, sitting as a Specialised Commercial Crime Court.
Broader Concerns Over Tender Integrity
The case adds to growing concerns around:
- Tender manipulation
- Abuse of public office
- Weak oversight in procurement systems
Public sector tenders are a critical mechanism for service delivery, and corruption in this space can:
- Delay infrastructure projects
- Inflate costs
- Undermine public trust
Final Thoughts
While the allegations remain before the court, the case underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in government contracting.
With specialised units like the Hawks stepping in, authorities appear to be intensifying efforts to tackle corruption at all levels of public service.
