Meta Platforms has announced that Nick Clegg is stepping down from his role as president of global affairs. Joel Kaplan, Clegg’s deputy, has been named as the new head of policy for the social media giant.
In a Facebook post, Clegg reflected on his tenure, expressing pride in his contributions to Meta’s evolution. “I am proud of the work I have been able to do leading and supporting teams across the company to ensure continued innovation can go hand in hand with increased transparency and accountability, and with new forms of governance,” he wrote.
Clegg joined Meta, then known as Facebook, in 2018 after serving as the UK’s deputy prime minister. His appointment marked a strategic move for the company as it grappled with mounting regulatory challenges, public criticism, and antitrust lawsuits. Over the years, his responsibilities expanded to include overseeing communications and policy initiatives, culminating in his 2022 promotion to president of global affairs.
Reflecting on his time at Meta, Clegg noted the shifting landscape of technology governance. “My time at the company coincided with a significant resetting of the relationship between ‘Big Tech’ and the societal pressures manifested in new laws, institutions and norms affecting the sector,” he added.
Joel Kaplan, who joined Meta in 2011 to oversee US public policy, brings significant experience to his new role. Prior to Meta, Kaplan worked on the campaign and administration of former US President George W. Bush. His promotion signals Meta’s continued focus on navigating complex regulatory and political landscapes as it seeks to maintain its position in the tech sector.
Meta’s Path Forward
As Meta continues to face scrutiny over the societal impact of platforms like Facebook and Instagram, Kaplan’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to maintain stability and foster constructive engagement with regulators and policymakers.
