Noordheuwel High School has announced that Rikus Kylander, the 18-year-old learner who went missing while snorkelling off the coast of Mozambique, achieved five distinctions in his 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
The confirmation of his academic success has been met with a mix of pride and heartbreak, as his family, friends and school community continue to grapple with his unexplained disappearance.
Disappearance during post-matric trip
Kylander, who is from Krugersdorp in Gauteng, went missing on 16 December 2025 while swimming at Ponta do Ouro Beach, a popular holiday destination near the South African border.
He had travelled to Mozambique with around a dozen classmates on a post-matric celebration trip when he failed to return from the water after going snorkelling.
Despite search efforts at the time, Kylander was not found. Authorities in Mozambique and South Africa have not released further updates on the case.
Academic achievement confirmed
In a statement, Noordheuwel High School confirmed that Kylander’s matric results were finalised and that he achieved five distinctions, underscoring his strong academic performance.
The school described him as a dedicated learner whose results reflect years of hard work and commitment.
While the announcement celebrates his scholastic achievement, it also highlights the painful reality that Kylander is not present to receive or celebrate the milestone himself.
Community response
The news has prompted an outpouring of messages from classmates, teachers and community members, many of whom described the results as both inspiring and deeply emotional.
For his family and friends, the achievement serves as a reminder of Kylander’s potential and the future that still hangs painfully in the balance.
The case remains unresolved, with hopes that new information may yet bring answers.
