Mamelodi Sundowns and Rulani Mokwena’s Uncertain Future

Tensions at Chloorkop have put Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach, Rulani Mokwena, on the brink of departure. Strained relations with sporting director Flemming Berg might lead to Mokwena stepping down, despite his recent successes with the club.

Mamelodi Sundowns and head coach Rulani Mokwena are navigating choppy waters as the coach’s tenure at Chloorkop appears increasingly unstable. Sources indicate that the relationship between Mokwena and the club’s sporting director, Flemming Berg, has deteriorated, prompting discussions that could see Mokwena stepping down from his role. While no official decision has been made, the likelihood of Mokwena’s departure is high.

Flemming Berg, who joined Sundowns in April 2022 after stints with the Danish FA and Chelsea, has found it challenging to work alongside Mokwena. The friction between them has reportedly been brewing for some time, exacerbated by differing visions for the team’s future, particularly concerning the upcoming transfer window.

Sundowns have already made significant roster changes, releasing players such as defender Brian Onyango, midfielders Bongani Zungu and Gaston Sirino, and striker Thabiso Kutumela. Junior Mendieta also hinted at a potential move to Greece. Despite these departures, the club has yet to announce any new signings, adding to the uncertainty.

Mokwena’s absence from the initial medicals upon the team’s return from holiday, although pre-season training had not officially commenced, fueled speculation about his future. It is rumored that Mokwena, a former coach of Orlando Pirates and Chippa United, might be considering a year-long sabbatical, allowing Berg to implement his project without further conflict.

Despite recent successes, including winning the DStv Premiership and being named Coach of the Season, Mokwena’s position remains precarious. He publicly hinted at discontent within the club, even after leading Sundowns to their seventh consecutive championship and clinching the inaugural African Football League title. However, the coveted CAF Champions League title remains elusive, with Sundowns exiting in the semifinals for the second consecutive year.

As discussions continue, the fate of Mokwena’s future with Mamelodi Sundowns hangs in the balance, leaving fans and the football community eagerly awaiting the final decision.
