A shocking situation has unfolded in Mahikeng, North West, where homeless children are roaming the streets during the day and sleeping in the cold at night—while a government property originally meant to shelter them is allegedly occupied by officials.
The facility, known as Park City in Golf View, was purchased by the state around the year 2000 to provide safe housing for vulnerable children. Instead, it has now been turned into residential accommodation for senior government employees.
Vulnerable Children Exposed to Abuse and Neglect
Community activists say the displacement has left children exposed to some of the worst social ills. Instead of having a roof over their heads, many now face life on the streets, where they are subjected to drug use, violence, and even sexual abuse.
“The intricacies of homelessness in the area highlight the appalling conditions homeless children are exposed to. They were supposed to be protected, but now they are victims of neglect,” said local activist Thato Molosankwe.
Allegations of ANC and Government Officials Living Comfortably
According to Molosankwe, the facility has been turned into a residential enclave for the politically connected.
“A house that was bought for the children around the year 2000 is now occupied by top officials within government, the Department of Social Development, and there are allegations that top ANC officials are living there. They stay comfortably here with their families; you can see expensive cars parked here. These are people with money, and there are allegations they pay from R150 to R1,000,” he claimed.
Community Outrage and Calls for Accountability
The allegations have sparked anger in Mahikeng, with residents demanding answers from both the provincial government and the Department of Social Development. Many argue that instead of prioritising the welfare of children, resources are being diverted to benefit the powerful.
With winter conditions worsening, the plight of these children is growing increasingly urgent. Activists are calling for immediate intervention to restore the shelter to its rightful purpose and to ensure accountability for officials allegedly misusing state property.
