Local Stars Shine at the 2nd National Film and TV Awards South Africa

The National Film Academy has unveiled its nominee list for the 2nd annual National Film and TV Awards South Africa (NFTA), celebrating the country’s top talent in film and television. Nonku Williams, Lawrence Maleka, and Connie Ferguson are among the popular stars nominated this year.

This prestigious event continues to grow, with over 1.7 million public submissions highlighting its importance in showcasing South Africa’s creative industry. The NFTA is part of a global awards series, with previous editions held in the UK and the USA. The Academy’s focus is on connecting South African talent to international audiences, providing a platform for both rising stars and seasoned professionals.

A Stellar Lineup of Nominees

The Best Actress 2024 category is one to watch, featuring performances from Nambitha Ben-Mazwi for her roles in Savage Beauty and Empini, alongside Katlego Lebogang (Yoh! Christmas and Spinners), and Ama Qamata for Blood and Water. Icon Connie Ferguson is also nominated for her performance in Heart of the Hunter, while Kwanele Mthetwa’s work in Lobola Man rounds out the category.

In the Best Actor 2024 category, nominees include Siyabonga Twala (Empini), Lawrence Maleka (Lobola Man), and Sisanda Henna (Heart of the Hunter). Their competition includes Melusi Mbele (The Butcher’s Soul), Bonko Khoza (Red Ink), and Lunga Shabalala (A Soweto Love Story).

Best Drama Series and TV Categories

The Best TV Drama Series 2024 category includes Savage Beauty, Blood and Water, House of Zwide, Diepe Waters, and the long-running favourite Skeem Saam. These series represent the rich storytelling that South African television has become known for, balancing drama with diverse cultural narratives.

In addition, Nonku Williams has been nominated in the Best Female TV Personality category for her role in The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip. Lawrence Maleka, who continues to make waves in the industry, is nominated in the Best Male TV Personality category for his hosting role in Big Brother Mzansi.

2024 Ceremony Set for Pretoria

The NFTA ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 9th, 2024, at the Opera Theatre in Pretoria. The event promises to be a star-studded affair, recognising the best in South African film and television talent.

The full nominee list showcases a blend of established actors and newcomers, demonstrating the vibrancy of the South African entertainment industry.
