Limpopo Attorney Arrested After Allegedly Speeding Off with Handcuffed Client

In a dramatic turn of events, a 35-year-old attorney from Limpopo has found himself on the wrong side of the law after allegedly aiding his handcuffed client in a high-speed getaway. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, popularly known as the Hawks, apprehended the legal practitioner for his involvement in helping a suspect escape, conspiring to escape from lawful custody, and interfering with police operations.

The incident unfolded at the Giyani Magistrate’s Court when police arrested the suspect, also 35, for the alleged theft of a motor vehicle. The suspect had just appeared in court when the Hawks served him with an additional warrant related to another vehicle theft case. With the suspect in handcuffs, law enforcement officers began making arrangements to transport him to the police station. It was at this moment that his attorney allegedly took matters into his own hands.

According to Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, spokesperson for the Hawks, the attorney swiftly escorted his client to his own vehicle and sped off, evading police attempts to stop them. Despite a brief pursuit by the police, the attorney’s vehicle managed to slip away.

However, the attorney later returned to the Giyani police station, still with his client in tow, who remained restrained by police handcuffs. Both men were subsequently arrested and were expected to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Major General Gopz Govender, the provincial head of the Hawks in Limpopo, has expressed his approval of the swift action taken by the authorities, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law without interference. He also issued a stern warning to others in the legal profession, urging them to refrain from obstructing police duties.

This incident raises serious concerns about the actions of legal professionals and their responsibilities within the justice system. The case is set to unfold in court, where more details will likely come to light.
