In an exciting announcement, Kia unveiled its much-anticipated Tasman double-cab bakkie at the Jeddah Motor Show on October 29, introducing a strong contender in the pickup truck market. Kia’s Tasman, its first-ever bakkie, is set to arrive in Africa, including South Africa, in 2024, with plans to reach additional markets in Australia and the Middle East. Built to appeal to the growing demand for rugged yet lifestyle-oriented vehicles, the Tasman marks Kia’s entry into the competitive bakkie segment with an innovative and assertive design.
“Kia’s first-ever pickup truck was created from the ground up to transform the market and respond to the growing preference for lifestyle-oriented trucks with advanced features,” said Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia.
Bold Exterior and Versatile Body Options
Manufactured in South Korea, the Tasman is designed with an all-new body-on-frame platform, featuring Kia’s signature grille and unique headlamps. The bakkie is available in both single- and double-cab models, with an off-road version tailored for rugged terrain. The commercial market will also see a chassis-cab variant, further expanding its utility and versatility. Kia describes the Tasman’s design as distinct, showcasing bold lines and unique features that set it apart in the market.
Modern Interior with Tech-Savvy Features
Inside, the Kia Tasman stands out with a contemporary and spacious cabin packed with technology. A panoramic wide display highlights the dashboard, integrating a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 5-inch climate control console, and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. Additional features include dual wireless charging pads, a large folding console table, and hidden storage bins under the rear seats that offer 33 litres of capacity.
The Tasman also prioritises comfort, particularly for backseat passengers. Kia claims it provides “best-in-segment” headroom, shoulder room, and rear legroom, with the back seat able to recline between 22 and 30 degrees, promising a relaxing experience for all occupants.
Engine Options and Performance
Kia offers the Tasman with two powerful engine options tailored to different markets. Buyers can choose between a 205 kW/421 Nm 2.5-litre turbo petrol engine, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds, or a 154 kW/441 Nm 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine. Transmission options include an 8-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Both the X-Line and X-Pro versions will come with all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard, while the base model will be available in a two-wheel-drive (2WD) setup. The AWD system adapts to various terrains, offering three primary drive modes—ECO, Smart, and Sport. Depending on the market, additional terrain-specific modes enhance traction on rough or challenging surfaces, making the Tasman a versatile option for both city and off-road driving.
