Groundbreaking R50,000 Huawei Mate XT Triple-Folding Smartphone Unveiled

Huawei Technologies has launched the world’s first commercial device with two folds, solidifying its leadership in mobile design shortly after Apple revealed its new iPhones. The triple-folding smartphone, called the Huawei Mate XT, starts at R50,256 (19,999 yuan) and represents over five years of development. The device, which folds into a compact form, fits a 10-inch tablet in a pocket, showcasing an innovative approach to mobile technology.

Unveiled during a live-streamed event from Shenzhen, the Mate XT targets the premium market in China, where Huawei has recently regained market share from Apple. This new launch continues Huawei’s momentum after last year’s debut of a mobile processor developed entirely in China, despite US trade sanctions. However, questions remain about the impact of such a high-end device in a market where foldables have yet to dominate.

Triple-Fold Tech Pushes Hardware Innovation

While competitors are focused on AI-powered features, Huawei’s emphasis on hardware engineering stands out. The Mate XT has been designed with three operating modes: as a standard smartphone, a nearly square foldable device, and a fully extended 10.2-inch tablet. It runs on Huawei’s proprietary Harmony OS.

Despite the innovation, analysts like Arthur Guo from IDC are sceptical about the broader appeal of trifold phones. Guo notes that the high technical requirements, low production yields, and hefty price tags make it unlikely that trifold devices will significantly boost the foldable market. Many phone makers are reducing investments in foldable technology, waiting for Apple to attract a larger consumer base to the category.

A Symbol of National Pride

For Huawei, the launch is more than just about sales. The company has become a symbol of national pride in China, following its success in developing in-house chips despite US sanctions. This sense of patriotism has translated into strong sales figures over the past year, with consumers embracing Huawei as a homegrown champion.

The Mate XT measures just 3.6mm in thickness when open (excluding the camera bump), making it one of the thinnest foldables on the market. The timing of its launch — just hours after Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone 16 — signals Huawei’s intention to assert dominance in the innovation space, particularly in its home market of China.

As Huawei and Apple prepare to battle for dominance in the premium smartphone market this holiday season, the Mate XT is set to attract attention. Huawei is expected to introduce a new Mate series later this year, further intensifying the competition between the two tech giants.
