South Africa’s beloved Afro-pop and soul band, Freshlyground, is gearing up for a spectacular performance at the iconic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The concert, scheduled for Sunday, January 5, will be the band’s first at Kirstenbosch with their new vocalist, Mbali Makhoba, and promises to be a magical evening of live music.
A Fresh Chapter for Freshlyground
With over two decades of musical brilliance, Freshlyground has become a cornerstone of South Africa’s music scene. Their Afro-pop sound, infused with poignant lyrics, has resonated with audiences locally and globally. Now, with Mbali Makhoba taking centre stage, the band breathes new energy into their iconic style.
Makhoba, excited about her journey with the band, shared her thoughts:
“Being part of the Freshlyground legacy has been an incredible journey. Performing at Kirstenbosch, a venue so rich in culture and natural beauty, is both humbling and exhilarating. This concert will celebrate everything that makes South Africa extraordinary—our music, landscapes, and people.”
The Congo Cowboys Add to the Excitement
Adding to the evening’s allure is the Congo Cowboys, a trio featuring Freshlyground’s Simon Attwell and Julio Sigauque alongside Congolese musician Chris Bakalanga. Known for their fusion of Bluegrass, Kwassa Kwassa, and Soukous guitar rhythms, the Congo Cowboys promise a captivating blend of Americana and African sounds.
Kirstenbosch’s Storied History with Freshlyground
For Kirstenbosch, hosting Freshlyground is like welcoming back old friends. Sarah Struys, Events and Tourism Manager, expressed her joy:
“Freshlyground was an institution here for many years. From their first big public concert in January 2003 to their farewell New Year’s Eve show in 2019, they’ve left an indelible mark. To now welcome them back with Mbali Makhoba is incredibly special.”
Struys also praised the Congo Cowboys for their recent performances, noting their “delightful cultural blend and musical skill.”
A Night to Remember
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Table Mountain, the concert offers music lovers of all ages the chance to come together under the stars for an extraordinary evening. Fans can expect an enthralling mix of old favourites and new renditions, making this an unmissable event for anyone passionate about South African music.
