The telecommunications industry has lost one of its most influential figures with the passing of Raymond Sifiso Dabengwa. Dabengwa, who served as the CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015, succumbed to cancer earlier today, according to a statement released by his family spokesperson.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Raymond Sifiso Dabengwa, who succumbed to cancer this morning,” the spokesperson said. “He was a titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the sector.”

Dabengwa’s tenure at MTN was marked by significant achievements. He took the reins as CEO following the departure of Phuthuma Nhleko on 31 March 2011. During his leadership, Dabengwa was credited with driving key advancements that positioned MTN as a leading player in the global telecommunications arena. His strategic vision and dedication were instrumental in steering the company through a period of intense competition and rapid technological change.

Before becoming MTN’s CEO, Dabengwa served as the group chief operating officer. His journey with the company began in 1999 when he was appointed managing director of MTN’s South African operations. In 2004, he was promoted to chief operating officer and took on a dual role as the CEO of MTN Nigeria, where he played a pivotal role in the company’s expansion in the West African market.

Prior to his career at MTN, Dabengwa was an Executive Director at Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity utility. His extensive experience in both the energy and telecommunications sectors made him a respected leader with a deep understanding of the complexities of large-scale operations.

Dabengwa was not only a business leader but also a passionate advocate for education and the transformative power of technology. He believed in the potential of technology to improve lives and was committed to initiatives that promoted education and technological advancement in Africa.

He is survived by his wife, Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, who is the chief executive of Naspers South Africa, and their four children. His legacy as a leader and innovator will continue to inspire future generations in the telecommunications industry and beyond.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dabengwa held a BSc in Electrical Engineering and an MBA, reflecting his strong foundation in both technical expertise and business acumen.

Dabengwa’s passing marks the end of an era for the telecommunications industry, but his contributions will be remembered for years to come. His life and work serve as a testament to the impact that visionary leadership and dedication can have on an entire industry.
