Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has embraced a new chapter in his spiritual journey by being baptised and licensed as a minister. The ceremony, held just days before his 70th birthday on December 28, marked a significant milestone for the celebrated actor, who has often shared his deep Christian faith.
A New Beginning
The baptism took place at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ, a Pentecostal church in Harlem, New York. Washington, dressed in a white robe, was immersed in the church’s ritual pool, with the event livestreamed on Facebook. Following the baptism, the church presented him with a certificate and a minister’s license, enabling him to officiate at minor religious services such as weddings.
Addressing the congregation, Washington reflected on his spiritual journey, saying: “It took a while, but I’m here.” He recounted a pivotal moment from his youth, when a woman named Ruth Green prophesied that he would “travel the world and preach to millions of people.”
A Life of Faith
Washington’s public acknowledgment of his faith has been consistent throughout his career. In a recent Esquire interview, he recalled a powerful religious awakening in the early 1980s at a Los Angeles church. Describing the experience, he said: “It felt like I was getting lifted up. It felt like my back was arched, and I had my eyes closed. Not that I was going up in the air, but … I can’t exactly describe it. And I was blabbering, and kept blabbering, because I was filled with the Holy Spirit.”
While his faith has been a guiding force, Washington has acknowledged the challenges of openly discussing religion in Hollywood. “You can’t talk like that and win Oscars. You can’t talk like that and party. You can’t say that in this town,” he said, referring to the entertainment industry’s tendency to sideline conversations about spirituality.
A Dual Legacy
Washington, who is currently starring in Gladiator II, adds his new role as a minister to an already illustrious career. Known for his powerful performances and integrity, his latest spiritual milestone aligns with his commitment to living a purpose-driven life.
As Washington approaches his 70th birthday, his baptism and ministerial license symbolize a deeper commitment to his faith and a willingness to share it with others. For his fans and the congregation at Kelly Temple Church, the moment underscores a message of perseverance and spiritual fulfillment.
