At the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), held on November 10 at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena, Busta Rhymes was honoured with the prestigious Global Icon Award. The legendary rapper, known for his rapid-fire delivery and groundbreaking contributions to hip-hop, was presented with the accolade by UK-based rapper Little Simz.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Busta revealed that this was his first-ever appearance at the MTV EMAs, after 34 years in the music industry. “This is the first time I’m getting an award from MTV, and it feels incredible,” the 52-year-old artist said, his voice brimming with pride.
Paying tribute to the pioneers of hip-hop, Busta credited his long-time inspiration, LL Cool J, for shaping early hip-hop culture and influencing his career. “LL Cool J is my hero,” Busta shared, acknowledging his fellow rapper’s significant impact. He also gave heartfelt thanks to his mother, calling her his “best friend and hero.”
Following his emotional acceptance, Busta Rhymes delivered an electrifying performance of his iconic hits, including “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” “I Know What You Want,” “Do the Busabus Pt 2,” and “Look At Me Now,” thrilling fans with his dynamic stage presence.
Busta joins a prestigious list of past winners of the MTV Global Icon Award, including the late Whitney Houston, Eminem, U2, and others, solidifying his place in music history.
