Bryan Smiley, president of Hartbeat and an executive producer on the series, aims to transport viewers to the era’s Atlanta. “We shoot a lot of content in the city, but oftentimes it’s not about the city,” says Smiley. “With Fight Night, Atlanta plays a huge part in the story. It’s not just a backdrop but a character in itself.” The show immerses audiences in the 1970s with music, fashion, and the electric energy of a city evolving into a hub for Black culture and influence.

Smiley adds that this series is more than just a crime thriller; it’s an experience that will make viewers appreciate Atlanta’s complex history. With each episode, you are taken back in time, invited to walk the streets of a city on the brink of change.

A Stellar Cast Takes Center Stage

Kevin Hart, known for his comedic roles, shows a different side of himself in the series, playing the streetwise Chicken Man. Hart’s preparation for the role came through research, drawing heavily from the podcast that inspired the series. “There was a lot of valuable information through the podcast. With the direction of the creators and the director, we found a way to land on a portrayal that felt true to Chicken Man’s journey,” Hart explains.

Don Cheadle, who portrays J.D. Hudson, one of Atlanta’s first Black detectives, embraced the challenge of bringing a historical figure to life. “Playing a real person meant there was a lot of research to dive into,” Cheadle shares. “This time in Atlanta was crucial, with the city becoming a significant hub for Black culture. It was a transformative period, and I was thrilled to be a part of telling this story.”

Cheadle and Jackson’s on-screen chemistry adds another layer to the series, especially given their long history of working together. Jackson describes his experience as rewarding and fun, noting that the camaraderie among the cast heightened the storytelling. “It’s gotta be fun for us, or it won’t be fun for you,” Jackson emphasizes.
