With Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts (now rebranded as New Avengers) smashing box office expectations, actor Lewis Pullman is already looking ahead to his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bob Reynolds, better known as the Sentry — and his dangerous alter ego, the Void.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pullman opened up about returning for Avengers: Doomsday, the next major crossover event in the MCU.
“I was so surprised and honored to hear that I was going to be able to dip my toes into Doomsday,” Pullman said. “Because I wasn’t sure how much of his memory was lost, and whether he’s covering, or whether it’s really real and he is fully back at square one.”
Pullman Teases an Emotionally Complex Return
In Thunderbolts, Pullman’s Bob undergoes a traumatic transformation, ultimately becoming the destructive Void — a force of chaos that pushed the team to its limits. Though the Void is defeated, the film ends with Bob seemingly depowered and amnesiac, leaving fans wondering what comes next.
“Does that mean that he has to relearn all of these emotionally valuable lessons that he’s garnered?” Pullman pondered. “Or is that something that becomes inherently a part of him?”
The actor hinted that his character’s journey could go in many directions, adding to the mystery and excitement surrounding Avengers: Doomsday.
Sentry: A Hero With Infinite Power — and Infinite Risk
The Sentry, introduced in Marvel Comics in 2000 by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, is a character of immense complexity. Gifted with near-limitless power after ingesting a variant of the Super-Soldier Serum, Bob Reynolds is both Marvel’s answer to Superman and its cautionary tale of unchecked power. His alter-ego, the Void, is a manifestation of his darkest thoughts — and a threat so great that heroes like the Avengers and X-Men have tried to erase him from history.
In the comics, Sentry’s memory is often manipulated or wiped to suppress the Void, setting up rich narrative potential for Pullman’s return in the MCU.
Thunderbolts* Marks a Major MCU Turning Point
Now officially rebranded as New Avengers, Thunderbolts* has grossed R5,040.11 million at the global box office in less than two weeks and is being hailed by critics as a return to form for the franchise. Marvel fans and analysts have praised the film for its tight storytelling, emotional stakes, and fresh tone after a mixed reception to recent MCU projects.
Even Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged Thunderbolts as a major success, calling it:
“The first and best example of our renewed strategy — fewer productions, better quality, and more meaningful stories.”
What to Expect in Avengers: Doomsday
While plot details remain tightly under wraps, Pullman’s comments confirm that Sentry will play a significant role in Avengers: Doomsday. Whether Bob remains a reluctant hero trying to rebuild himself or becomes a ticking time bomb waiting to unleash the Void again remains one of the most intriguing threads in the MCU’s current Phase.
Fans are now eagerly awaiting official announcements about casting, storylines, and how Doomsday will continue to build on the darker, more grounded tone established in Thunderbolts.
