South African Airways (SAA) is set to relaunch daily flights between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam on Monday, 20 January 2025, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s resurgence and commitment to connecting Africa.
Strengthening Economic and Cultural Ties
SAA Interim CEO, Professor John Lamola, emphasized the strategic importance of the route, calling it a bridge that connects two of Africa’s largest economies. The service aims to foster trade, investment, and collaboration, benefiting industries and communities in both South Africa and Tanzania.

- South Africa remains a major source of foreign direct investment in Tanzania, with robust trade in agricultural products, chemicals, precious metals, and machinery.
Flight Schedule
- From Johannesburg (OR Tambo): Departs at 10pm (SAST), arrives in Dar es Salaam at 2.30am (EAT).
- From Dar es Salaam (Julius Nyerere): Departs at 5.10am (EAT), arrives in Johannesburg at 7.55am (SAST).
- Seven weekly return flights are designed to accommodate both point-to-point and connecting passengers.
Expanding SAA’s Regional Network
This relaunch aligns with SAA’s broader strategy of strengthening its presence in Africa:
- Increased flights to Harare, Lusaka, Lagos, and Accra.
- New routes to Lubumbashi, a key mining hub in the DRC.
