Russia has accused the United States of launching military action against Iran under what it describes as a fabricated pretext, escalating diplomatic tensions amid a widening regional crisis.
Speaking to reporters, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova alleged that Washington had used ongoing negotiations with Tehran as a cover for a long-planned strategy aimed at regime change.
According to Zakharova, talks between the United States and Iran had been taking place as recently as last week, only for military action to follow shortly thereafter. She characterised the alleged Iranian threat repeatedly cited by Washington as “imaginary” and “invented”.
“There is no doubt that the imaginary, invented Iranian threat, repeatedly stated over many years, was merely a pretext for the implementation of a long-cherished plan to violently overthrow the constitutional order of a sovereign state that Washington and Tel Aviv dislike,” she said.
Strategic Partnership Between Russia and Iran
Russia and Iran maintain a strategic partnership treaty, and Moscow has consistently positioned itself as a diplomatic and military ally of Tehran. The latest developments have further tightened that alignment.
Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned what he described as the “cynical murder” of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed on the first day of hostilities launched by the United States and Israel on Saturday.
Putin’s remarks signal a deepening geopolitical divide, with Moscow framing the situation as an unlawful intervention against a sovereign state, while Western leaders have argued that their actions were necessary in response to security concerns.
Zakharova Condemns Calls for Iranians to “Seize Power”
Zakharova also criticised Western rhetoric encouraging the Iranian public to remove the country’s clerical leadership. Without naming US President Donald Trump directly, she alluded to statements urging Iranians to take control from the current regime.
“It is even more cynical and inhumane to hear calls for the Iranians to seize power, as the West says, when the West is literally tearing these hands from the Iranians,” she said.
Her remarks reflect Moscow’s longstanding opposition to what it sees as Western interference in the internal political affairs of other states. Russia has frequently accused the United States and its allies of promoting regime change under the banner of democracy and human rights.
Rising Global Tensions
The situation marks a sharp escalation in an already fragile regional balance. Analysts warn that direct military confrontation involving the United States, Israel and Iran carries significant risks for broader Middle Eastern stability and could further strain global diplomatic relations.
For South Africa and other countries observing from the sidelines, the developments underscore the volatility of global power politics and the far-reaching consequences such conflicts may have on energy markets, trade routes and diplomatic alliances.
While rhetoric on all sides remains heated, calls for restraint from the international community continue. Whether diplomacy can re-emerge as the dominant path forward remains uncertain, but the stakes are undeniably high.
