Rulani Mokwena Takes the Helm at Wydad Casablanca: A New Chapter for Moroccan Giants

Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca have officially appointed Rulani Mokwena as their new head coach. The former Mamelodi Sundowns manager transitions to this prestigious role after leading his former club to remarkable successes and parting ways under controversial circumstances.

In a significant move for both South African and Moroccan football, Rulani Mokwena has been announced as the new head coach of Wydad Casablanca. This announcement came on Thursday, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both Mokwena and the Moroccan football giants.

Mokwena’s departure from Mamelodi Sundowns was sudden and unexpected. Last week, he led the Sundowns to a record-extending seventh successive league title, marking his fourth title in as many years with the club. However, his tenure at the South African champions ended following a fallout with the club’s sporting director, Flemming Berg. The disagreements reportedly centered around transfer decisions, youth player promotions, and the club’s strategic direction.

The 37-year-old coach will not be making this transition alone. His trusted assistants, Sinethemba Badela and Michael Loftman, are expected to join him in Morocco, bringing their expertise and support to the new coaching team at Wydad Casablanca.

Mokwena’s departure from Chloorkop was heartfelt. He expressed his gratitude to the Motsepe family, the club owners, as well as the players and fans in a poignant letter. His move to Wydad Casablanca is seen as a continuation of the path paved by fellow South African coach Pisto Mosimane, who made waves in 2020 by taking over at Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Wydad Casablanca stands as one of the premier football clubs on the African continent. Mokwena’s appointment is particularly noteworthy as he previously bested Wydad last year to claim the inaugural African Football League title. Additionally, Wydad’s participation in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup adds an exciting dimension to Mokwena’s new role. Although he fell short against Esperance in the Champions League semifinal, Mokwena had successfully secured Sundowns’ qualification for the Club World Cup, underscoring his aspirations to compete against the world’s elite football clubs.
