A 24-year-old man from North West is set to appear in the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday after allegedly stealing an ambulance—with a patient on board—outside a local hospital.
Brazen Theft Outside Hospital
According to police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, the incident occurred on Thursday night around 11:55 PM. Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) personnel were attending to a patient in front of the hospital when the suspect seized the ambulance and drove off.
“The patient, already secured in the back of the ambulance, was unharmed,” Myburgh confirmed.
Swift Police Action
Authorities were alerted immediately after the theft. Acting quickly, police tracked the ambulance to Tshing, Extension 5, just outside Ventersdorp. The vehicle was recovered, and the suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Friday.
Charges and Commendations
The suspect faces charges of motor vehicle theft. Acting North West police commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng commended officers for their rapid response. “Their swift action ensured the safety of the patient and recovery of the ambulance,” he said.
Public Concern
The incident has raised questions about security at medical facilities. EMRS personnel often face challenging conditions, and this event highlights the need for enhanced safety measures to protect both healthcare workers and patients.
