BMW’s Chinese Partner YFPO Invests R1 Billion in South Africa, Creating 300 Jobs in Tshwane

Yanfeng Plastic Omnium (YFPO), a prominent global automotive component manufacturer and BMW’s long-time partner, is making a significant investment in South Africa. The Shanghai-based company announced its plan to inject R1 billion into the local economy, which will also bring over 300 new employment opportunities to the City of Tshwane.

A Strategic Partnership in Automotive Excellence

YFPO, established in 2007 through a joint venture between Yanfeng Automotive Trim Systems and Plastic Omnium, has grown into a powerhouse in the automotive components industry. The company specializes in both interior and exterior vehicle components, producing everything from seats and steering wheels to grilles and bumpers. Today, YFPO operates in more than 20 countries with over 50,000 employees across its 240 facilities worldwide.

The South African branch of YFPO will play a crucial role in the production of all painted plastic exterior components for the next-generation BMW X3, which is being assembled in Rosslyn, Pretoria. This move is part of a broader strategy by BMW to localize production and increase its footprint in South Africa.

Commitment to Localisation and Sustainability

Jerry Ni, the General Manager of YFPO, emphasized the company’s dedication to not only supporting BMW’s operations but also to advancing localisation efforts. The project, which aligns with BMW’s goals for the new G45 (BMW X3) platform, aims to integrate advanced manufacturing processes that are lightweight, environmentally friendly, and equipped with smart technology to enhance user experience.

Ni also highlighted YFPO’s commitment to empowering the local workforce. “We are prioritizing the employment of local youths, particularly women, in managerial roles,” said Ni. He added that the company plans to invest in skills transfer and training programs to ensure sustainable development within the community.

Furthermore, YFPO’s initiatives will complement the City of Tshwane’s environmental goals by focusing on sustainable materials and energy-efficient production techniques. This approach is expected to reduce the overall environmental impact, supporting Tshwane’s economic growth and contributing to its GDP and employment rates.

Local Government Support

The investment has been warmly welcomed by local authorities. Mash Moeketsi, Functional Head of the City of Tshwane, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Given that the automotive industry supports Tshwane’s economy and contributes significantly to the GDP and employment, our coalition government welcomes this achievement.”

The City of Tshwane views this as a milestone in attracting further investments and boosting economic activity in the region. Moeketsi added, “The City of Tshwane is delighted to be part of this major milestone and trusts that more investments will come to Tshwane.”

Conclusion

YFPO’s R1 billion investment is not just a financial boost for South Africa but a testament to the country’s growing importance in the global automotive industry. With BMW’s backing and the local government’s support, this partnership is set to drive significant economic growth, create jobs, and contribute to a more sustainable future in Tshwane.
