From Sierra Leone Orphan to Global Ballet Icon
DePrince’s extraordinary journey began in war-torn Sierra Leone, where she was orphaned at a young age. Her path to global stardom was nothing short of miraculous. After being adopted by an American family, she first came to public attention in the 2011 documentary First Position, which chronicled her as a promising young dancer competing in the Youth America Grand Prix. This exposure opened doors for her, leading to a scholarship at the prestigious Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre.
In 2012, DePrince made history as the youngest dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Her career continued to flourish when she joined the Dutch National Ballet in 2013, where she performed for seven years until 2020.
