Babyface Receives Legacy Award at Apollo Spring Benefit, Cherishes Sons’ Pride

Renowned Grammy Award-winning musician Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds experienced a heartwarming moment of paternal pride while being honored for his illustrious career and influence ahead of Father’s Day. At the age of 65, Babyface received the inaugural Legacy Award during the Apollo Theater’s annual spring benefit held in Harlem, New York. This award commemorated his exceptional contributions as a singer, songwriter, and music producer spanning over four decades.

During the award presentation by rapper and actor Fat Joe, Babyface took a poignant moment to acknowledge his sons, Brandon and Dylan. The “Seven Seas” singer expressed, “The thing that made me most proud is that I had two of my boys with me, Dylan and Brandon, they were with me, and they both came up to me and they said, ‘Dad, I’m so proud to be your son.’”

He continued, emphasizing the deep personal significance of this recognition, “I have to tell you that that’s the best gift that I could ever get. Just to hear that from their mouths straight to me.” This sentiment highlighted the dual legacy Babyface holds—not only as a monumental figure in the music industry but also as a father who has made his children proud.

Reflecting on his journey and the honor bestowed upon him, Babyface shared, “And to know that I’ve done something, not just for the world, but I did something for my kids that made them proud. And that’s what we’re here for.” This personal touch underscored the importance of family and personal fulfillment in his storied career.

He expressed heartfelt gratitude, albeit with a humorous acknowledgment of his overwhelmed state, “everybody,” though he admitted, “the specific names have just gone out of my head.” He concluded his speech with sincere appreciation, “I’m so taken by this, and I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I appreciate it. Thank you so much.”

The event also recognized Usher and featured vibrant musical performances from artists like Jordin Sparks, Karyn White, Avery Wilson, and others, adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the evening.
