Anti-Apartheid Icon Pravin Gordhan Passes Away at 75

Former Public Enterprises Minister and renowned anti-apartheid activist, Pravin Gordhan, has passed away at the age of 75. He died peacefully in hospital earlier this week, surrounded by family and close friends, after a short battle with cancer.

Gordhan’s death marks the end of a long and impactful career in public service. Throughout his life, he served in various key government positions, including Minister of Finance, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and Public Enterprises. He was also SARS Commissioner for a decade, where he played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s revenue services.

Having retired from government service after the May 29 elections, Gordhan’s health took a turn shortly thereafter, leading to his hospitalisation earlier this week. A family statement confirmed his passing, noting, “After his retirement, Minister Gordhan fought a short, courageous battle with cancer.”

He is survived by his wife, Vanitha, and two daughters, Anisha and Priyesha. The Gordhan family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.

A Lifetime of Service

Pravin Gordhan’s contribution to South Africa’s post-apartheid era was monumental. From his anti-apartheid activism to his time as a government official, Gordhan was widely respected for his dedication to fighting corruption and upholding integrity in public service.
